Scholarship funds available through Friends of the Library

Orange County graduating high school seniors are invited to apply for a scholarship funded by the Friends of the Orange County Library System.  The Ray Frenier Memorial Scholarship provides three scholarships each year: one for $1,000; one for $750; and one for $500.

To be eligible to apply, a student must:

  • Complete over the school year a minimum of 75 hours volunteering in the Bookstore, Gifts & Greetings, as a Teen Library Corps member, or at a branch library
  • Complete an essay of at least 250 words about the library and the experience of volunteering there
  • Provide one letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, coach or other positive adult role model
  • Have a library card in good standing.

The online scholarship application can be found here. Information on becoming a volunteer, as well as a volunteer application can be found on our Join Us page.  The initial applications must be received by February 15, 2011.  Essays must be received by April 1, 2011.

Applications will be reviewed by a scholarship committee and three top entries selected.  Winners will be notified by April 15, 2011.  Scholarship recipients and their parents will receive an invitation to attend the annual Friends of the Library Volunteer Lunch in May where they will be publicly recognized as a scholarship winner.

Proof of acceptance to a university, community college or technical school is required to receive scholarship funds.  The funds will be dispersed directly to their school of choice.

About the Ray Frenier Scholarship:  Established in 2008, this scholarship serves to honor the memory and contributions of long-time library volunteer Ray Frenier.  Instrumental in the growth of the Bookstore and Friends Group, Frenier volunteered with the Friends of the Orange County Library System for more than two decades.  The Friends of the Library created this legacy scholarship after Frenier's death in 2008.
